Wheeler Field
On December 7, 1941, I was an airman stationed at Wheeler Airfield, upland from the harbor.  We had the Army fighter planes and the Japanese planes came in over the Kale Kale pass and hit us first, so our fighter planes could not retaliate.  Needless to say they didn't miss any targets  even the base chapel was destroyed and we lost many men.

Later that day, I went over to the harbor to see the unbelievable destruction including the Arizona and the other Naval vessels.  Earlier in 1941, I had spent a day visiting on the USS Arizona and was impressed by their crew and kidded them that they ate better than we did  they even had apple pie for breakfast.

On the night of December 6, 1941, I attended a band concert at the arbor where the battleship bands competed.  The Arizona band came in second and the next morning all the band members were killed.
