"America is more than just a country...it is an idea...a great idea.  Ghandi once said that he couldn't think of anything he thought worth killing for, but he could think of a lot of things he thought worth dying for.  The freedom, sovereigny and self determination that is America is definitely one of those things worth dying for.

This does not mean that America is perfect.  As long as racism, sexism, and abuses continue to be perpetrated against people, we will not be perfect.  This does not mean we should give up and quit...on the contrary we should remember the visions of our founding fathers, and work harder to make them come true.  I think of us as a work in progress.

With all it's faults, America is still the best country in the world to live in...we are mightily blessed, and I consider it a privilege to be a part of her."

"Let us not forget the actions of the past, so that we will not reach a state of unpreparedness as was achieved in December 1941.  Just as December 7 is Pearl Harbor Day, it is also a symbol of our democracy and freedom."

"I will never forget the faces of those men trapped in the engine room. I knew there was no way I could lift those steel grates and I also knew at that point that my chances were very slim of getting out of there myself. I believe I was the next-to-last man alive to leave the ship."
---Clarence W. Durham, Survivor - USS Utah
