On December 7, 1941, Roberta was married to James Moe who was on duty with Combat Intelligence in the basement of the administration building located in the Navy yard. Roberta was in Navy Housing just outside the main gate. She was able to watch the attack from the upstairs area. The Japanese planes were coming in so low that as she ran out into the front yard a Japanese plane passed and the pilot waved or saluted her. Roberta saw some of the bombs released from the planes and watched as they exploded.
The women and children were evacuated. Those with children were taken to the YMCA. Single women went to private homes in the area. Roberta ended up in a home containing a nice living room and several small bedroomsshe thinks it was probably a whorehouse. She slept that night on the sofa. Although James had a chance to go look for her, he could not find her. It was a day or so before Roberta could go home. |
