I was a member of the USS Farragut (DD348), a destroyer, at Pearl Harbor on 7 December l941. We were tied up with several other destroyers in our Division and near Aiea, about 1/2 mile from the battleships. So we did not get hit very much. However, we did return a lot of automatic andcanon fire. We only sustained a few bullet holes and no one was injured.
The Farragut went through the whole war and was awarded 14 Battle Stars for taking part in that many major battles. As far as I know, only 1 man was slightly injured at the Coral Sea Battle, during the whole war.
I remained in the Navy and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1963. I served on 2 destroyers, a repair ship and 3 aircraft carriers, as well as in an Air Group. |
