William J. Lever (Bill) joined the Army on January 12, 1940 at Fort Moultrie, South Carolina. After training he was shipped to Pearl Harbor on April 4, 1940. Bill was in the 65th Engineers Combat Battalion, 25th Division. While at Pearl Harbor it was attacked by the Japanese Air Force. Bill was at the YMCA in Honolulu on leave at the time of the attack. When the bombing started they all went to their barracks at Schofield Barracks. They were able to get machine guns and went to the roof and fired at the planes as they came past.
During his time over seas he took part in the following battles:
Pearl Harbor Guadalcanal North Solomons Luzon Munda in the New Georgia Islands New Caledonia Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines
Bill passed away on January 9, 1999 while living in Yuma, Arizona.
