US Navy
USS Whitney

I was on the USS Whitney at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

We were just across the island from the battleships.  Our ship and the USS Dobbin each had 5 destroyers along side.  None of us were hit.

One of the fellows in our department looked over when he saw the Jap planes.  About that time, we heard the bombs start exploding.  We made it to our battle stations.  The destroyers alongside pulled out and went out of the harbor and chased down a small Jap submarine.

The two groups of Jap planes came over and I believe it was over between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m.

We stayed in Hawaii until May, then went on down to Tonga, then to New Caledonia.  Stayed there a few months then went to Guadalcanal and on to Tulagi.

In February 1944, they sent some back to the states for time off.  Then I went to a destroyer (USS Conway).  It wasn't too long after that the war was over with Germany.  I got shore duty in Newport, Rhode Island and finished out the war there.
