Julius A. Finnern was stationed on the USS Monaghan, a destroyer. About four minutes after the attack, his ship headed out to assist the USS Ward. A Japanese submarine surfaced directly in front of the Monaghan in the harbor. Finnern's ship rammed it. The sub went under and came up behind the Monaghan "and we dropped two 500-pound depth charges directly on it, sinking it."
"My job was to prepare ammunition belts for machine gunners, so I was right up on the deck. A Japanese plane was so close we could see the machine gun holes in the plane."
