USS Nevada
Col, Stoddard Gregg Cortelyou United States Marine Corps Retired, was a new 2nd Lt., Class of 1940 Marine Corps Basic School, aboard USS Nevada.  She was the only ship to get underway that morning as she was changing boilers and one is always ready to take off.  Steamed down the waterway until Harbor Master told men to beach her as Japanese were beginning to shell her badly and there was danger the ship would be sunk and close the harbor.

Col. Cortelyou rode the USS Nevada to State of Washington where it was repaired.  He joined the 2nd Marine Division and participated in the next three notable battles.  Returned home and was assigned to flight school.  He fought Korean War as a jet fighter pilot.  Retired in Oct. 1968 He did Medical Continuing Education Programs with U. of MN and then Continuing Electrical Engineering Programs with George Washington University, coordinating classes in the U.S. and Europe.

He is now recuperating from a June Stroke.  His Marine Corps roommate at Basic School was on the Arizona at Pearl.
