I was drafted in July of 1941 and went to boot camp at Ft. Belvoir, VA until approximately August 1, 1941. I arrived in Hawaii in October, 1941 and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in the 34th Eng. This was a completely new regiment of seven companies. Practically all of the officers and men were drafted and all were new to the Army.
After the attack on December 7, 1941, we were put into a different fortification. About two years later, we went to Ellis Islands and the company split up and there were approximately one platoon to an island on three different islands.
Later, we moved to Gilbert and Marshall islands and then back to Hawaii. The 34th split up into the 34th and 1334th. Several others and I went to the 1397th . All of the units ended up on Siapan (the 34th, 1334th and 1397th).
In early 1945, several others and I who had been overseas, with no pass home, went back to the states and went back on rotation. We had a 2 week delay in route to go home. During my leave I got married and celebrated VE Day.
I was discharged at Ft. Levenworth in 1945. |
