Ford Island

I was stationed in Patrol Squadron 24 at the Naval Air Station, Ford Island.  The part that I played protecting our forces was very small.  The first bomb that hit the Island flattened the Hanger right next to ours.  I did not know what was happening, but I did know that it was time for me to seek a safe haven.

There was a construction ditch running along the edge of the runway beside our hanger and that is where I spent most of the time along with about 300 of my shipmates.  We were literally helpless.  I have always thought that maybe some of the prayers I said might have helped, so that is all I can really take credit for.

I was sent to the battle of Midway, but again I really didn't serve any useful purpose.  I was discharged in 1943 for injuries that I suffered due to having dived into that ditch and receiving severe neck and head injuries.  It came back to haunt me in a few years.
